Feng Shui, which means ‘wind & water’, is a complicated subject that can take a lifetime to study and master. The principals of Feng Shui are relevant to the placement and use of water features in the home and garden. Even if we may not have a full understanding of Feng Shui, there are easy and simple techniques we can use. In most cases these will be better then doing nothing at all and will hopefully spark a further interest in this art that will lead to increased study and the ability to implement more effective techniques. Keep an eye on the general color tones of bright and dark when decorating or adding accents like water fountains to your indoor areas. To many bright or dark objects will skew the energy of a room towards Yin or Yang and cause the energy there to be too strong. Even if it is the right sort of energy, for example Yang and active for an office or Yin and passive for a bedroom, too much will hinder the work there and make it difficult to work or sleep. Try to create a balance between the two extremes slightly skewed towards the work or energy you want to achieve in the area. Wall fountains with stone or marble add more Yin energy, while those with mirrors or bright metals like stainless steel add more Yang. Long hallways and corridors speed up energy which can make using them uncomfortable or taint the energy from circulating appropriately in other areas of the home. A great remedy for long hallways is an indoor waterfall at the far end. Such a water feature attracts the attention of those walking and calms them as they travel. The energy actually feeds the fountain and vice versa in this arrangement which makes the fountain appear and sound more soothing then it would otherwise be. Lighting on the waterfall is an especially nice touch that will light the area and keep the energy from becoming too Yin. Some interpretations of Feng Shui recognize water flow as symbolizing wealth. This principal is especially applicable to outdoor water features or garden fountains that are the type having water flow in one direction rather then in a circle. One directional fountains include water trough , single lion head types and those having a face or animal head that spits water from the mouth. We want to make sure these are sending water and wealth towards our home rather then away from it. |
